Green Packaging Based on Material and Design Requirements

With the progress of human civilization and the development of social economy, "green" and "environmental protection" have gradually become the common voice of the world. Green mountains, green waters, fresh air and natural non-toxic food once belonged to human beings, but with the establishment and long-term development of industrialized society, various industrial and agricultural pollution opposite to "green" and "environmental protection" flooded every corner. In the commercialized society, people are constantly in contact with various commodity packaging, commodity packaging is inevitably facing the "green tide".
The Concept of Green Packaging
"Green packaging" is a new concept derived with the progress of society. It is the embodiment of human civilization. Green packaging refers to the packaging that is harmless to the ecological environment and human health, can be reused and regenerated, and conforms to the strategy of sustainable development. It is also called ecological packaging. From a technical point of view, green packaging refers to an environmentally friendly packaging developed from natural plants and related minerals, which is harmless to the ecological environment, human health, conducive to recycling, easy degradation and sustainable development. That is to say, its packaging products should meet the requirements of ecological environment protection from the choice of raw materials, the manufacture of products, to the whole life cycle of use and abandonment.
In order to achieve the goal of green packaging, we should start with green packaging materials and packaging design.
I. Green Packaging Materials
Degradable material is a kind of green packaging material worthy of further research and development. After using this material, under the action of photosynthesis or microorganisms in soil and water, it gradually decomposes and reduces in the natural environment, and finally re-enters the ecological environment in a non-toxic form and returns to nature. For example, a French dairy company made an ecological packaging box by mixing the substances extracted from beet with minerals.
There are several kinds of green packaging materials as follows:
1. Edible packaging materials: edible packaging based on plant polysaccharides or animal polysaccharides mainly includes starch film, modified cellulose film, animal and plant gum film, chitosan film and so on.
2. Degradable plastics: refers to a kind of plastics whose chemical structure changes in a specific time and under a specific environment which causes performance loss. Degradable plastic packaging materials not only have the functions and characteristics of traditional plastics, but also can be degraded and reduced in the natural environment through the role of ultraviolet rays in sunlight or microorganisms in soil and water, and finally enter the ecological environment in a non-toxic form.
3. Repeated reuse and recycled packaging materials: such as beer, beverage packaging using glass bottles, can be used repeatedly. If the polyester bottle is recycled, it can be regenerated in two ways.
4. Paper material: The raw material of paper is mainly natural plant fiber, which will rot quickly in nature, will not pollute the environment, and can also be recycled and re-made. Nowadays, many large international companies use recyclable paper to make annual reports and promotional materials, and use recycled paper to make letterpads and stationery to reflect their green purpose of paying attention to the environment. At the same time, they have established a good corporate image. Paper materials are also used for pulp casting parts, composite materials, building materials and other purposes. Pulp moulded products not only have the advantages of light weight, low price and shock resistance, but also have the characteristics of good air permeability.
The research and development of green packaging materials have greatly reduced the use of non-degradable packaging materials, alleviated the pressure of the ecological environment to a certain extent, reduced the depletion of petroleum resources, reduced environmental pollution, and solved the international prohibition of the use of non-degradable packaging materials on China's export commodities. The wide use of green packaging materials is of great significance not only from the practical point of view of earth protection, but also from the overall point of view of sustainable and healthy development of national economy, or from the perspective of high-tech packaging materials technology. Although there are still some problems in green packaging materials, such as poor thermoplasticity, high cost, complex production process, unstable products, narrow application scope, potential danger in contact with food packaging materials, we have reason to believe that these problems will be gradually solved with the cross-penetration of environmental science, biochemistry, macromolecule chemistry and other disciplines.
Second, packaging design in the packaging design link of accurate and reasonable selection of materials, coupled with perfect creativity, can also play a decisive role in the development of green packaging.
In addition, in the design, saving materials is also one of the contents of green packaging. Moreover, in terms of design language, we should emphasize and publicize environmental protection information, and create an atmosphere of green packaging between patterns, brand names, colors and words.
In a word, in the aspect of packaging design, we should start with material selection, structure and function, production process, packaging mode, storage and transportation mode, product use and waste disposal and so on. We should refer to the utilization of resources and environmental impact and solutions in an all-round way. Throughout the design, the principle of saving is to reduce energy consumption as much as possible, to facilitate disassembly, and to enable materials and components to be recycled.
In packaging printing, "green" packaging printing is an integral part of the packaging industry, but also faces a problem of environmental protection, "green printing" is a new concept that the printing industry has been following the trend of world environmental protection in recent years.
The traditional gravure printing ink in packaging and printing contains volatile solvents harmful to human body, which not only directly endangers the health of gravure workshop workers, but also pollutes the products packaged by the printed packaging. This is a serious problem to be solved urgently in packaging and printing industry. Flexography instead of gravure printing should be a development trend. In addition, it is also a main way to actively develop and develop water-based ink instead of solvent-based ink.
In recent 10 years, flexographic printing has made a great progress in packaging and printing at home and abroad. Besides the technical advantages of flexographic printing itself, one of the most important factors is that flexographic printing can meet the requirements of environmental protection and green packaging. It can widely use non-toxic, non-residual solvent, non-environmental pollution ink and UV ink.
Now flexo printing technology has made more obvious technological breakthroughs. Wide, medium and narrow flexographic press has taken a step towards high speed and multi-function, especially the continuous innovation and development of printing plate, substrate, ink and alcohol ink manufacturing technology, which makes flexographic technology have broad development space in trademark, paper, folding carton and corrugated carton printing. The application of direct digital laser engraving technology in flexographic plate has brought about seamless plate, which has made great progress in flexographic technology. Seamless plate is suitable for multi-functional flexo printing production line of various composite materials. It can also be used for rotating screen and UV flexo plate polishing and rotating bronzing. It also develops flexographic prints from cardboard, white board, coated paper and newsprint to cellophane, candy paper, gold card, silver card and aluminum foil.
